How To Cook Survival Style
How To Cook Survival Style
Getting food in disaster situations is imperative. Not only do you need food to survive, you will need it for warmth and to have the energy to complete various tasks. Depending on where you are, fish or small mammals will be the easiest form of protein and nutrition. These foods must be cooked, and must be cooked well. After using a survival knife to skin and clean game, it’s time to cook your food.
First, you must wrap your food to save it from the flames and fire. Non-poisonous leaves work, just make sure you know where to find the leaves and which ones are not poisonous. If you carry foil with you, this is a luxury that will come in handy for meals. Once wrapped, you can make a primitive grill to place over a fire. Or, you can have a camping grill like this one ready. If you have pots and pans, consider yourself lucky! You can mix cooked meat with vegetables and stocks to make a hearty stew.
If possible, carry a meat thermometer with your survival gear, because it can become disasterous to ingest meat when it is not cooked properly. Illness can’t be afforded while trying to survive and thrive. Go right now, and find a guide to the proper temperatures to cook different kinds of meats. Study it, learn it, and know it. Keep it as a reference, but it’s much more helpful to memorize this information.
When you cook survival style, you need to make sure that your utensils are kept clean and sterile. This way, food particles won’t attract bugs or animals. This also prevents bacteria and mold from forming. Learning how to cook survival style can be intimidating, but it’s easier with practice. You can practice when you go camping, or even in your own back yard. One day, it may just save your life!
Survival Knives serve many different functions, and are extremely useful. They are one of the most diverse tools you carry with you in camping, hunting, and survival situations. Here are just a few of the uses for survival knives –
- Cutting down rope, which is needed to tie down shelter or traps. Sometimes even for repelling.
- Close Range Hunting, which is necessary at times for survival. Works for larger game as well as smaller game like fish.
- Cleaning game – you need to be able to skin an animal before cooking and eating it.
- Clearing Brush – Thick brush is a constant struggle, and a larger knife can cut through this and improve vision and mobility.
- Weapon against hostiles – If your country or region is taken over by hostiles, you need multiple ways to protect yourself with weapons. Knives don’t run out of ammo!
- First Aid – Knives can be used to be heated and seal wounds. They can be used to dig out a bullet, and cut stitches after wounds are healed.
- Amputation – If things are not going well for someone, a knife may need to be used for amputation of small limbs.
Here is a video about Survival Knives that is very useful:
There are many different types of Survival Knives. Here are several.
- Pocket Knife – These fold, and are compact.
- Swiss Army Knife – This knife functions as a variety of different tools. With the Adventurer Model, you have a screw driver, bottle opener, tweezers, awl, and toothpick all in one. That’s a lot of uses packed in one small knife!
- Full Size Ka-Bar Straight Edge – This knife has a 7 inch blade, and works well for hunting and up close and personal protection against wildlife and hostiles. It gets the job done.
- Ontario RTAK II Fixed Blade Knife – This is less of a knife, and more of a machete. It has a carbon steel blade, and can cut through foliage. The total length is about 16.5 inches long.
What is your survival knife of choice? The best option is to always have many options. If you want to be fully prepared, you will want to have all options available to you. Each knife serves a unique purpose, and will come in handy in times of disaster.
Survive a Tsunami
Survive a Tsunami
Tsunamis, when they happen, can be devastating to all life surrounding them. Tsunamis are a series of huge, awesomely powerful waves that result from underwater disturbances. These disturbances are usually earthquakes and volcanic activity. You can not stop a Tsunami from happening, but you can prepare yourself if you live in an area prone to Tsunamis.
If you live in an area which is considered a Tsunami hotspot, you will need to be prepared at all times. Make sure you always have a First Aid Kit near you, whether you are at home or in your vehicle. Water, food, and climate appropriate clothing are all essential items to have stocked.
Know the signs of a Tsunami. Local authorities will help with this, as well as paying attention to the news and radio. Underground tremors are major warning signs of a potential Tsunami. Do not ignore the signs! If you see the signs and feel the warnings, immediately follow these next steps.
Immediately head to higher ground. Ideally, this will be at least a few miles from the coast, or 100ft above sea level at minimum. The further away from the coast and the higher above ground, the better.
Wait it Out
Tsunamis are a series of waves. As in, more than one. Once you reach higher ground, you need to be prepared to wait out the waves and destruction. Make sure that you are in a safe location for waiting this out. When disaster strikes and others are not prepared, they are more likely to become desperate and loot. Protect your family and belongings. You may have to wait weeks before anything returns to normal.
Prepare your Family
For any time a Tsunami strikes, you need to have a plan in place ahead of time. Not only is this plan needed for yourself, but for your family as well. Have a family meeting and go over drills, plans, and evacuation and meet-up plans for when a Tsunami does strike. Make sure each person knows the warning signs of a Tsunami. Give your family easy to understand plans, and go over them regularly. It can be the difference between panicking, and calmly escaping grave danger.
Since rebuilding after a Tsunami can take months or even years, you must have a back up plan. First, you need to have plenty of food and water to last as long as possible. Next, have somewhere to go and remain after a Tsunami strikes. You may never be able to see your home again. Do you have relatives who live in an area where Tsunamis are not likely? Contact them well ahead of time, and ask if they are willing to be your backup plan for in case of disaster. Once you survive a Tsunami, you will need to survive the aftermath.
Food supplies are running short around the world. To “solve” this problem, GMO mega-corporation Monsanto is creating and selling genetically modified foods. There are no studies to show whether these genetic modifications cause cancer, or if they even yield larger crops than organic farm grown foods.
In places like Venezuela, the food crisis is at its peak already. People are looting in order to survive, stealing food, and even eating zoo animals. It’s horrible, and it is a desperate situation. How far away is the US from reaching a crisis of this magnitude? Well, we really can not know. In order to ensure your family will aways have food, it is time to start Survival Gardening.
Here are some important factors for creating your survival garden:
- It needs to be low-maintenance. If water supplies are short, you need that water to drink and bathe. A survival garden must be very self-sufficient.
- The garden must attract bees and other helpful insects, while repelling insects which eat gardens.
- Survival Gardening should be a very private endeavor. When a food crisis strikes, you do not want anyone else to know you have a survival garden which can easily be spotted or stolen from.
- It must be able to fertilize itself. When disaster strikes, you will not be able to simply go to the store and buy fertilizer. There are techniques to ensure your garden will fertilize itself.
- Space is an issue. If you make it too large, you won’t be able to maintain it and keep it a secret.
- Survival gardens need to be able to withstand extreme weather conditions. You can not afford for a freeze or heat wave to destroy your entire yield.
Lucky for you, we have found a guide available for purchase for survival gardening here. This comprehensive guide will teach you how to start and maintain your survival garden. This guide follows every bullet point we just listed, and then some. You can plant your survival garden now, and stop taking frequent trips to the grocery store. This garden can literally last a lifetime, and even after!
[Video] – What Can You Do To Prepare For A Disaster
I answer this question and more in this Video…
I encourage you to watch it.
Once you’re done, jump over here to learn even more about how to prepare for disasters and what to do when they happen.
Build a Survival Bunker
A Survival Bunker can protect your family from all kinds of dangerous situations. If there is an enemy attack, a natural disaster, or some kind of invasion, you need to have a survival bunker. You must keep your family well protected and safe at all times. Safety is a priority in uncertain times, which we are certainly experiencing right now.
You can buy a survival bunker pre-made, or you can build your own. Out of the two options, building your own will save you a lot of money. While it may be a trade in terms of effort and time, you can build a survival bunker and save thousands of dollars in the process.
When building your bunker, consider the following requirements as must-haves:
- It needs to be hidden and secretive.
- Hostile threats can not be capable of entering.
- It needs to fit your entire family comfortably.
- You must have six months of food stored inside.
- Ventilation is necessary.
- It must have long term electricity capabilities.
- Your bunker needs to be able to withstand bombs, earthquakes, or other natural disasters.
You can not simply start to build a survival bunker without plans. Luckily, John Hartman has comprised a plan for you including blueprints, tips, tricks, and material lists. John is a retired member of the US armed forces, and is also a certified disaster and survival expert. His Family Bunker Plans even include how to obtain the building permits required. Without acquiring the proper permits, you will have more headaches than imaginable during your project.
Having a Survival Bunker will give you peace of mind, and could one day save your life. Keep your family protected and prepared. Surviving disasters is possible, and we must be ready for anything thrown at us. Remain prepared, survive, and thrive!
Morale in Survival Situations
Morale in survival situations may seem like a luxury that you do not have time for. However, it is quite the opposite. Keeping morale high of fellow survivors, yourself, and family members is one of the most important parts of getting through a disaster or emergency situation.
Stress, sadness, loss of life, and lack of contact with the outside world are all factors which can lead to a reduced morale level. Disasters and emergency situations can have a lasting affect on your mental state. It is possible to remain optimistic and maintain a sense of humor, even when disaster surrounds you.
If you are stuck at home for an extended amount of time, it’s time to bring out the musical instruments and board games. You should do these activities after you provide and maintain food, water, and other essentials. Maybe you can sing songs together around a campfire. If you have marshmallows, roast them over a fire. Talk about all of the happy memories you share together.
Even if you will not see the outside world for years to come, you can maintain a level of morale in survival situations. If you are off the grid, make sure to bring items from home that bring comfort to each household member. Simply having a physical connection to happy memories can lift spirits and boost morale.
When you maintain a good level of morale, difficult tasks become easier to handle. Stress levels go down, and so does anxiety. These reduced stressors can prevent you from making mistakes when it really counts. If you have to administer First Aid, it becomes very important that you are not stressing out and anxious.
What would you do to maintain morale in survival situations? Let us know your plan in the comments. After all, it may save your life!
Children in Disaster Situations
Children in Disaster Situations
When disaster strikes, there are many factors to consider. Having children can have a profound impact on how you must handle a situation. When children are exposed to disasters, their responses much depend on their age. Based on responses from children, you will need to help maintain their mental states and well being.
Children under the age of two or three will not have the mental capacity to understand what is going on. The images of any bodies or injuries around them may affect them later on in life, but they will not be able to process the loss of life or friends no longer being there.
Kids between the ages of four and seven will have a better idea of what is going on, but will have the addition of worry. This age, children feel helpless and need to be reassured countless times that you are there for them. Protection is key for this age. The loss of life will be known to them, and injuries may make them panic.
Older children around ages seven to twelve will revert back to a state of shock, they will remember the events for the rest of their lives. Reassurance, protection, as well as explanations need to be given. “Why” will be the number one question. “When will this end” may be the second most common question from these children. Older children also want to help. Give them small tasks and let them know that these tasks are important. This helps with the sense of “helplessness.”
Teenagers and young adults can be trained to handle survival situations. If you have a teenager, the time to start preparing is now. Teach them how to start fires, store food, use weapons, and most importantly, cope. A teenager being able to cope can mean the difference between a detrimental mistake, and the proper handling of a disaster situation. Teenagers and young adults will still need reassurance, and will still suffer from symptoms of shock.
If you have children, you need to have extra emergency supplies for them. This means more medicine, extra of everything in your First Aid Kit, extra food, and extra water. Their bodies are growing, while ours are not. Some extra considerations are child size gas masks, extra clothing, and survival gear in their size.
Your Behavior has an Impact
The most important thing children in disaster situations can learn from is YOUR behavior during and after the disaster. Children look up to us more than we realize. It’s important to provide a good example for them, whether in a disaster situation or not. Children must be comforted, whether it is an inconvenient situation or not. Morale is important for adults, but even more vital for children. If there seems like there is no hope, show them there is hope. There is always hope, and this hope can be taught before and during a disaster strikes. In your survival pack, include your child’s favorite toy or stuffed animal. Clinging to this item, it can remind them of hope and comfort them in difficult times. Protect and reassure children in disaster situations. After all, they are our future.
Survive a Zombie Apocalypse
Seriously. A zombie apocalypse may never happen, but it totally could. At the very least, maybe a disease outbreak or widespread pandemic. A disease could potentially have similar effects as rabies, which would be terrifying if there were millions infected. Whether someone is trying to eat you or not, an infectious disease on a global scale is possible. Not only is it possible, it is probable. Take this guide on how to survive a zombie apocalypse, and apply it to being prepared for a global infection.
Watch Zombie Movies
This may not seem like the best course of action, but in reality, it is. These movies have directors and actors who study what may actually happen if there were zombies. There are realistic scenarios in movies like Zombieland, the series The Walking Dead, and even in 28 Days Later. Watch these movies for some ideas on how to prepare for a zombie apocalypse.
Stay on Social Media
If there is a zombie apocalypse, you can be sure that it will be all over Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Even in emergency situations, somehow people find the time to post it to their personal pages. If you notice some strange news reports popping up on social media, you can put 2 and 2 together before the masses.
Supplies are not something you gather when a situation occurs. You gather supplies before they are needed. Here are some supplies that come in handy for a zombie apocalypse:
- Weapons – including baseball bats, axes, guns, bow and arrows, and ammunition for your weapons. Buy a bulk amount of ammunition, you don’t know how long you will need this. Potentially, forever.
- Food – Food supplies are always important. Keep them in stock, always! For a zombie apocalypse, you need to have enough food to last as long as possible.
- Gas Masks – What if the disease is airborne? There are already many airborne diseases. Gas masks can prevent the spread of a disease and protect against gas warfare the government may use to eliminate zombies.
- Clothes – Have clothes for any kind of weather. Make sure clothes are strong and easy to move around in. Knowing how to make clothes really comes in handy as well.
- Water – Water may become contaminated. Have as much water available as you can.
- First Aid – Doctors? Fat chance. Get yourself some basic medical training, and have a decent first aid available to you.
If you can have a bomb shelter built, do it! Sometimes the best option is to have a shelter which does not allow anyone inside. Infected individuals could try to come in, do not let them. Once infection enters, you are done for.
Following these steps, you can survive a zombie apocalypse. How do you plan to survive a zombie apocalypse? Sound off in the comments!
Top 5 Survival Gear Items You Need
Top 5 Survival Gear Items You Need
Some survival items are more like luxuries when you are in a survival situation. A pop up shelter or tent, an emergency radio to contact the outside world, or a portable generator may not always be on hand. These items make survival easier, but they are not as necessary as other items. When you want to be prepared for the worst case scenario, there are 5 survival gear items you need. Here are those items.
1. Water Storage & Purification
You may be able to survive a good long while without food, but water is not the same. Our bodies need water to function, so you need a way to store and purify water. If there is a worldwide catastrophe, getting your hands on water will become a problem. Not just your problem, but everyone’s problem. Water can become contaminated and unsafe to drink. People may kill in order to survive, and this includes stealing water. Not only should you have water stored, but a purification device for new water you come across.
2. First Aid Kit
First Aid is essential, a requirement, a must. The more chaotic a situation becomes, the easier it is to become injured. A good first aid kit will include everything you need for just about any situation. A nuclear detonation would take extreme measures for survival, and you don’t want an injury to slow you down.
A knife can make a sticky situation easier to manage. There are several reasons why you need a knife in any survival circumstance. It will help you clean game, start a fire, build a shelter, open food, create other tools, and more. The list is really endless with this one.
There is no situation in which carrying around gear in your hands is a viable option. You must be able to carry your gear with you at all times, even if you are lucky enough to have a vehicle. When you leave your vehicle, it can be stolen. A bomb can drop. Anything can happen. Carry your gear, you’re in the clear.
This one is obvious. Our bodies need food to store energy. If you are running away from the enemy, that running requires energy. Everything you do requires energy. If you want to be able to build a shelter, light a fire, stay alert or even stay alive, you need energy. A body depleted of energy is one of the most dangerous scenarios of survival.
These Top 5 Survival Gear Items You Need are not a joke. You may think that you don’t need to worry about these right now. Here’s a newsflash, though, you can think you don’t need it all the way up until disaster strikes. Do not wait until it is too late. The time is now!
