What is Hurricane Season

What is Hurricane Season

what is hurricane season

So, what is hurricane season? Hurricane Season is also known as The Atlantic Hurricane Season. It’s a set period of time when most tropical cyclones of the year are expected to develop across the northern Atlantic Ocean. The start dates and end dates can vary from year to year. The 2017 hurricane season is between June 1st and November 30th.

How Hurricanes Form

NASA says that hurricanes are the the most violent storms on planet Earth, and they should know. The ingredients of a hurricane are very simple: heat and water. Hurricanes happen over warm water, which exists above the equator. Above the ocean’s surface, the air takes in both heat and moisture. When the hot air rises, lower pressure is left behind below it. Higher pressure air moves into lower pressure air areas. It heats up and rises, and then the process repeats itself. This then creates swirls in the air. When the hot air rises higher into the atmosphere, it cools off and becomes clouds. Now, the swirling air and clouds combine to create a deadly hurricane. There is no such thing as a safe hurricane.

How to Prepare

Before Hurricane Season begins, you must prepare. Know your evacuation route at all times, especially the time leading up to Hurricane Season. You must have supplies for before, during, and after the hurricane. Even if the storm is only tropical and not a full-blown hurricane, the damage can be devastating. Have all of your supplies and evacuation plans in place, just in case. If you want to read on how to specifically prepare for and survive a hurricane, check out our blog here.

The Aftermath

Hurricanes can obviously affect people and families. They can be responsible for hundreds or thousands of deaths if deadly enough. But that’s not the only thing hurricanes can do. Economies can be affected when an area needs FEMA intervention. Businesses may need to close permanently after a hurricane causes too much damage to fix. Insurance claims skyrocket, and can put family businesses and local government on hold.

Hurricane season can be scary, but you can be prepared for whatever is to come. Have one goal in mind: survival!

How to Prepare for Hurricane Season

How to Prepare for Hurricane Season

how to prepare for hurricane season

There are many different ways on how to prepare for Hurricane Season. There are also different times to manage different tasks in preparation. Let’s go through what you should do before Hurricane Season, when there is a warning, and when the Hurricane hits.

Before Hurricane Season Starts

You need to start off prepared for the upcoming Hurricane Season. If you live near a coast, you need to learn and know your evacuation routes. Is your house Hurricane Proof? If not, consider having your home upgraded with storm shutters, Hurricane Windows, and more. If you are having a home built, ask the builder what updates you can make to help your home be more Hurricane resistant.

There are also items and supplies you need to have an abundance of to stay prepared.

When there is a Hurricane Warning or Watch

Leave any areas that are low, or have a probability of flooding. Get to your home, and put boards on the windows and doors. If you have patio furniture or any large objects outside, you must secure those. This is also a good time to gather all of your food and water supplies, as well as the first aid kit and additional clothing. If there is an evacuation put in place, take immediate action and get out! Pay attention to all weather reports and news stations.

During the Storm

Stay in a room that is secure, does not have any windows, and does not have large objects. These large objects can become deadly projectiles. Don’t use any candles, either. These can quickly become fire hazards. Continue to monitor the weather using a radio, or NOAA radio.

After the Hurricane

First of all, make sure the storm has actually passed. Do not go outdoors until you know the storm is completely over. Even after the eye of the hurricane passes, there are still deadly winds and storms to shortly follow. If there are any power lines that have fallen or are down, report them and stay far away from them. Use your supplies including the food and water. It may take a while, but things will return back to normal. Continue to listen to the radio for weather updates. If your family needs assistance, contact local law enforcement. They may be busy, but help will come. Be patient, surviving a category 3 or higher hurricane is an achievement and a relief in itself!

How to Make Coffee While Camping

How to Make Coffee While Camping

How to Make Coffee While Camping

When you go camping, it’s nice to be able to still enjoy some of the same daily traditions you have at home. For many, the day starts with a good old fashion cup of coffee. There are a few different ways on how to make coffee while camping. Some are easier than others, and some turn out a bit more sophisticated. Either way, you should be happy to know that you do not have to go without your cup of coffee during your camping trip!

If you want to add creamer, it’s best to have some packaged dry creamers available. Liquid creamers need to be kept cold, and it can be difficult while camping unless you have a great quality cooler such as a yeti cooler.

The Old Fashion Way

The simplistic way to make coffee while camping is to fill up a coffee pot like this one with water. Dump your coffee grounds into the pot, and put it on the campfire. Once it is hot, you can pour yourself a cup of coffee. The grounds should settle down on the bottom of the cup so that you can enjoy your cup of joe!

The Coffeemaker

If you have a camping stove, you can use the Coleman Camping Coffeemaker to make coffee, just like you do at home. You put it on the stove, and it acts just as a regular coffee maker does. This is a good option when you don’t have to hike to the camp site, so you have more room in a car to store the items. It can be heavier if you have it in your backpack.

The French Press

A french press is lightweight, and easy to store in a backpack. Heat up the water, pour it into the french press, and add coffee. Voila! Your coffee brews, and you can press down to push the grounds all the way to the bottom.

Having coffee does not have to be a luxury. There are simple ways to get your cup of joe in the mornings, even while camping. Give it a try, and let us know your preferred method in the comments!

Tips When Camping

Tips When Camping

tips when camping

Camping is a fun activity that can be done with family, friends, or your partner. It can also be a good test of survival skills, instincts, and outdoor skills in general. There are some tips you may not be aware of to help you on your adventure. These tips can be helpful, or even life saving. Let’s review the best tips when camping we have for you today!

Campsite Location

Choosing a good location is imperative when camping. Have you ever heard someone call a tree a widow maker? It has the name for a very specific reason. Dead limbs and branches can be deadly. Do not camp near a dead tree, or in an area where there are dead limbs and large branches on the ground. Instead, camp under healthy trees for a bit of cover in case of light rain – it can definitely help.

Tent Choice

Camping tents come in all sorts of sizes, with different features and set-up times. If you are alone or with one other camp mate, consider choosing a smaller tent. Set up time will be quicker, and it’s light weight. If you’re bringing the whole family, buy a tent made for 8-10 people. No family enjoys a cramped space to endure all trip long!

Know how to build and start a fire. This will be essential for light, food, and family fun. Along with the fire, bring any pots, pans, and utensils you need for eating. If you aren’t the best at starting a fire, make sure to get a fire starter that will easily suit your needs.

Bring food that is compact and will not spoil throughout your trip. You should also bring food that is fun to eat – consider the classic S’mores! The whole family will enjoy this delicious treat while enjoying quality time together around the camp fire.

It’s important to make sure the entire family or other camp mates are familiar with camping safety. The fire has a lot to do with this, so make sure everyone understands what to do and not do near a camp fire.

Your clothing should be weather appropriate. If it’s cold, make sure to pack cold weather clothing that will keep you warm during your camping trip. If it’s hot, bring even more than enough water and wear clothing that allows you to breathe.

How Much are Camping Tents?

How Much are Camping Tents?

How much are camping tents

Tents come in all sorts of shapes, colors, and sizes. There are tents that can fit one person, and there are also tents that can comfortably fit eight people. Obviously, these two tents are going to be different prices. Tents can come with very basic features, or they can come stocked with the latest technology. This will also make for a price difference. Are you looking for something more basic, or something from a camper’s dreams? How much are camping tents? Let’s take a look at some different tents with very different features so that we can compare prices.

Basic Small Tents

This tent is as simple as it gets. It fits two people, it has easy set up, and it’s light. It’s just over $20, which is a great price for what you’re getting. It’s not for rugged settings like extreme heat or cold, but it will work for a simple camping trip nearby. A tent like this should work several times, and is great for those who don’t camp often. However, it will not have the long-lasting durability of other, more expensive tents.

If you’re looking for something more durable, this tent is what you’re looking for. It’s heavier, but it’s more durable. With aluminum ferrules, it is nearly rust-proof. There are doors on both sides, so you will not have to crawl over anyone to exit the tent. There is a mesh roof area that can be used for stargazing. The zippers are extra large for extreme durability. At about $80, the extra features and durability may make this heavier tent worth it for you.

Larger Tents

This dome family camping tent can fit five to six people, and it is ideal for camping with the whole family. The assembly is fairly easy, and it is completely waterproof. The ultra-thin mesh makes it ideal for keeping bugs out, while allowing a breeze to flow through the tent when weather permits it. It’s just over 15 pounds, which should be expected for this size of a tent. It’s a very reasonable $134.99.

If you’re looking for the ultimate family camping tent, this Coleman is probably it. It can fit 8 people, and it even has two separated spaces, or “bedrooms.” It has two doors and seven windows for full ventilation. The poles come pre-attached, making set up take only one or two minutes, much less time than most tents. This tent is heavier, so it is not ideal for backpacking. However, if you’re driving somewhere to go camping with your family, this tent is a must-have at $270.

So, how much are camping tents? The answer is, the price can vary. It depends on what you want, and what you’re looking for. Whatever your needs, you can find them with the tents on this list!

Survival Instincts – Tune in to yours!

Survival Instincts – Tune in to yours!

survival instincts

Survival Instincts are an important part of human nature. They exist to serve us, but sometimes they can hinder us as well. Once in a while, make an effort to re-train your brain! With modern technology, we have texting, television, videos, and more all at our fingertips. We can easily forget about our surroundings, making our survival instincts way out of tune.

Luckily, you can hone in on your instincts by doing some exercises. One of these exercises involves bugging out, and one involves bugging in. We will go over how to do both of these below. Pick one to do, or even do both! They can’t be done at one time, but they can be done sequentially.

Bugging Out

In the world of survival, bugging out means leaving your home and going to a remote location for at least 72 hours. You must survive without the use of technology, electricity, and more. Make sure you have a bug out bag prepared at all times. Be able to pick up and go at a moment’s notice. You need to have food, water, weapons, tools, and more. A way to stay warm, a way to stay cool, and shelter are all factors to consider.

Bugging In

Bugging in is just about the opposite of bugging out. In some emergency situations, you may not be able to leave your house. It’s important to be prepared for this. Turn off the electricity, cut off the water, and prepare to survive! No electronics are allowed, so you may want to shut them down and leave them in a closet. For bugging in, you need to have just as much preparation as bugging out. Just because you are home does not mean survival will not be difficult.

How well will you fare bugging in and bugging out? At first, your modern day habits will nag you, and you may want to cave in. Don’t do it! The only way to improve your survival instinct is to focus on survival only. Modern amenities will not always be there. Cell service may not be able to save you, and you may not always be able to contact 9-1-1. Disaster can easily strike at any given moment. Hone-in on those survival instincts, and be prepared!

What Should I Take Hiking?

What Should I Take Hiking?

what should i take hiking

Are you going on a hike? Planning is always important when traveling into the great outdoors. There are things you should take for hiking, and there are things that you should take in case of emergency. When you are out of your element, it’s even more important to make sure you take extra supplies. Here are the things you should take hiking every time –

Spare Clothes

You should always take a set of spare clothing with you when hiking. If your clothes become wet and it becomes cold, you could have some major issues. Hypothermia can be deadly.

Emergency First Aid Kit

Having an emergency first aid kit is of the utmost importance. If there is a medical emergency, you will want to know how to handle that emergency, as well as have the proper supplies. On the same note, you should have a pocket guide for your first aid kit.

Rope will come in handy for a number of uses. Setting up a shelter, securing a raft, and more. Rope is one of the most handy survival items out there.

Food & Water

If you are planning on a one day hiking trip, bring enough food to last a week. You can buy emergency meal bars and emergency water filters online. Food & water are necessary for survival, and the most important resources to consider when hiking, or in an emergency situation. Make sure to have a way to purify water along the way.

Map and GPS

Getting lost can easily be disastrous when hiking. Learn navigational skills until you are comfortable in your knowledge. Always have a map, and a GPS if possible. It is easy to get turned around in unfamiliar territory.

Yes, knives. Not one knife. Bring at least two knives or multi-tools with knives. There are too many reasons to list why having knives is important. They can get you out of a sticky situation, or even kill your food source for you.

You need a backpack to carry all of your supplies, of course! There are a ton of backpack options, which you can read about here.

Sun Protection

A hat, sunscreen, and sun resistant clothing are all important when hiking. You don’t want to have harsh sunburns on your skin, which can develop into much worse problems later on. Even in the Winter, the sun’s rays can do damage.

So, what should I take hiking? All of the above! Make sure you are well supplied, and prepared for anything that may happen on your trip.

Survival Clothes

Survival Clothes

survival clothes

The clothes you need for survival will largely depend upon the weather conditions. There are many different clothing items you should have for each weather condition. We will go over some essentials for several different types of weather.

Wind can be a big problem. If you want to avoid wind-burned skin, you will need clothing that helps to prevent this from happening. One essential item to own for this type of weather is windproof pants. This pair is not only wind-proof, but they are also quick-drying. If you come into contact with moisture, getting dry is a top priority for survival. You will need a wind-proof shirt to go with your pants. This base layer shirt can be put on comfortably underneath the rest of your clothing.

Waterproof clothing is also an essential survival clothes must-have. In the short-term, wet skin can lead to hypothermia or worse. In the slightly longer-term, it can lead to fungus or even gangrene if a wound is wet. A light-weight poncho will help protect you from water, and can even double as an emergency shelter covering.

Shoes are extremely important when it comes to staying dry. Feet are what you use to travel, so they are the most susceptible to injury and can slow you down or keep you moving. A pair of survival boots like these can save your life by keeping your feet dry and warm. This pair is more cumbersome, but is even snake-proof. If you know you are going to be in an area with snake activity, go ahead and make that investment. It’s better than having a snake bite in the middle of nowhere!

Hypothermia is one of the main causes of death when people go hiking or become lost outdoors. You need clothing that is not only water-proof, but that will keep you warm in extreme conditions. These specialized socks help to retain your body heat, which is something that must be considered.

The top layer of your clothing should be water-proof and light as well. Having a tactical jacket like this as a top layer can prevent moisture from seeping into your other clothing, and down to your skin. Make sure your base layer is waterproof as well.

Survival clothes are an investment that is well worth making. These clothing items can survive for years, and can help improve your chances of survival.
