Make Your Hurricane Plan

Make Your Hurricane Plan

make your hurricane plan

Don’t get caught without a plan

Hurricanes will happen, they are unavoidable in certain parts of the world. You already know how to prepare for hurricane season, but you need a specific plan set in place for you and your household in the case of a hurricane near you. You do not want to wait until there is a tropical storm brewing, or wait until there is a hurricane watch. Your plan should be ready for implementation long before a storm comes.

The first thing you must do is ask yourself some questions. The answers to these questions then need a plan to handle them properly. Let’s go over some of these questions now as a basic guide.

Questions to Ask before you Make Your Hurricane Plan

  1. Do you have children in your household?
  2. Are there any elderly family members to take care of?
  3. Do you own any pets that are members of your family household?
  4. Where are all of your important documents, deeds, birth certificates etc?
  5. How much gas does your vehicle hold in its tank, and do you have extra gas storage?
  6. How many family members fit inside your vehicle?
  7. Does anyone in your household have a medical condition requiring medication?
  8. Do your family members all know CPR and other First Aid trainings? Also, do you have First Aid kits?
  9. Where are the most important and sentimental items in your home?
  10. What is your city or town’s evacuation route in case of emergency?
  11. Do you live on a flood plain?
  12. Where will you go to ride out the hurricane?
  13. Do you have flashlights and batteries?
  14. Do you have emergency food and water storage?

When you answer each of these questions, you will have an outline of your hurricane plan. These considerations are important when making sure your family will stay safe during a hurricane. It’s time to start preparing now, not when a hurricane hits. Once you make your hurricane plan, go over it with your family every year, before hurricane season. Make sure everyone knows what to do, who to contact, and where to be in case contact is lost. Medications need to be gathered. Travel needs to be arranged in advance. Important items need to be in an easy to access location. Answering these questions is truly the first step in order to make your hurricane plan.

What are the Hurricane Categories?

What are the Hurricane Categories?

what are the hurricane categories

According to the National Hurricane Center, the Saffir-Simpson hurricane wind scale is a 1-5 rating based on the wind speed of a Hurricane. Not the wind speed at certain times, but the sustained wind speed. The scale can quite accurately determine potential damage of a hurricane, depending on the scale’s rating. Let’s examine the different hurricane categories and what they actually mean.

Category 1

A category 1 hurricane is a hurricane with sustained wind speeds of 74-95 miles per hour. Even a category 1 hurricane is very dangerous. Frame homes can sustain damage to major structures, such as the roof, vinyl siding, gutters, and more. A strong tree branch can easily fall or break off and fall onto a house, car, or even a person. Trees with shallow roots can completely fall over. Power lines may have damage, leaving people without power for days on end.

Category 2

Category 2 hurricanes have wind speeds of 96-110 miles per hour. These extremely dangerous winds cause extensive damage, without a doubt. Shallow root trees can snap, even larger branches will fall, and roads have branches blocking them. Expect total power loss which can take up to a week or longer to restore.

Category 3

Category 3 hurricanes have wind speeds of 111-129 miles per hour. The damage at this point is now devastating. Major damage to houses is common, and decking may be completely destroyed. Electricity and water can potentially take weeks to restore after the storm is no longer viable. This is the first category considered to be a “Major” hurricane.

Category 4

Category 4 hurricanes have wind speeds of 130-156 miles per hour. The damage is now catastrophic. Homes can lose the entire roof, or even exterior walls and siding. Most trees within the hurricane’s path are uprooted or snap in half. Power lines are almost all down, and outages can last months. Where the storm hits is uninhabitable for an unforeseen amount of time.

Category 5

This is the most devastating category of a hurricane. Wind speeds are 157 miles per hour or faster. A large amount of homes are completely destroyed. Roofs fail, and houses collapse. Trees and power lines are down everywhere within the storm’s path. The area of devastation takes weeks or months to rebuild.

Hurricanes are deadly. There can be loss of life in a category 1, and there is certainly loss of life at category 5. Know how to prepare and be safe. It’s hurricane season, so gather your supplies and evacuate when it is necessary. Here are some supplies to consider:

Emergency Food Rations

…The list goes on. How do you start to prepare for hurricane season? Start here.

What is Hurricane Season

What is Hurricane Season

what is hurricane season

So, what is hurricane season? Hurricane Season is also known as The Atlantic Hurricane Season. It’s a set period of time when most tropical cyclones of the year are expected to develop across the northern Atlantic Ocean. The start dates and end dates can vary from year to year. The 2017 hurricane season is between June 1st and November 30th.

How Hurricanes Form

NASA says that hurricanes are the the most violent storms on planet Earth, and they should know. The ingredients of a hurricane are very simple: heat and water. Hurricanes happen over warm water, which exists above the equator. Above the ocean’s surface, the air takes in both heat and moisture. When the hot air rises, lower pressure is left behind below it. Higher pressure air moves into lower pressure air areas. It heats up and rises, and then the process repeats itself. This then creates swirls in the air. When the hot air rises higher into the atmosphere, it cools off and becomes clouds. Now, the swirling air and clouds combine to create a deadly hurricane. There is no such thing as a safe hurricane.

How to Prepare

Before Hurricane Season begins, you must prepare. Know your evacuation route at all times, especially the time leading up to Hurricane Season. You must have supplies for before, during, and after the hurricane. Even if the storm is only tropical and not a full-blown hurricane, the damage can be devastating. Have all of your supplies and evacuation plans in place, just in case. If you want to read on how to specifically prepare for and survive a hurricane, check out our blog here.

The Aftermath

Hurricanes can obviously affect people and families. They can be responsible for hundreds or thousands of deaths if deadly enough. But that’s not the only thing hurricanes can do. Economies can be affected when an area needs FEMA intervention. Businesses may need to close permanently after a hurricane causes too much damage to fix. Insurance claims skyrocket, and can put family businesses and local government on hold.

Hurricane season can be scary, but you can be prepared for whatever is to come. Have one goal in mind: survival!

How to Prepare for Hurricane Season

How to Prepare for Hurricane Season

how to prepare for hurricane season

There are many different ways on how to prepare for Hurricane Season. There are also different times to manage different tasks in preparation. Let’s go through what you should do before Hurricane Season, when there is a warning, and when the Hurricane hits.

Before Hurricane Season Starts

You need to start off prepared for the upcoming Hurricane Season. If you live near a coast, you need to learn and know your evacuation routes. Is your house Hurricane Proof? If not, consider having your home upgraded with storm shutters, Hurricane Windows, and more. If you are having a home built, ask the builder what updates you can make to help your home be more Hurricane resistant.

There are also items and supplies you need to have an abundance of to stay prepared.

When there is a Hurricane Warning or Watch

Leave any areas that are low, or have a probability of flooding. Get to your home, and put boards on the windows and doors. If you have patio furniture or any large objects outside, you must secure those. This is also a good time to gather all of your food and water supplies, as well as the first aid kit and additional clothing. If there is an evacuation put in place, take immediate action and get out! Pay attention to all weather reports and news stations.

During the Storm

Stay in a room that is secure, does not have any windows, and does not have large objects. These large objects can become deadly projectiles. Don’t use any candles, either. These can quickly become fire hazards. Continue to monitor the weather using a radio, or NOAA radio.

After the Hurricane

First of all, make sure the storm has actually passed. Do not go outdoors until you know the storm is completely over. Even after the eye of the hurricane passes, there are still deadly winds and storms to shortly follow. If there are any power lines that have fallen or are down, report them and stay far away from them. Use your supplies including the food and water. It may take a while, but things will return back to normal. Continue to listen to the radio for weather updates. If your family needs assistance, contact local law enforcement. They may be busy, but help will come. Be patient, surviving a category 3 or higher hurricane is an achievement and a relief in itself!
