Do you have a backpack to use for survival? Survival backpacks come in different styles, weights, and types. The three main types of backpacks are hiking backpacks, military style backpacks, and school backpacks. There are pros and cons to each, so let’s review them here.

School Backpacks

School backpacks are wonderful for every day life. They can hold essentials for short over-night trips, but are not efficient for hiking or travel. They do not hold enough supplies to last for days on end, and certainly do not hold enough supplies for an unexpected adventure. The durability depends on materials, and the price is normally pretty high when considering the disadvantage of not being made to withstand survival purposes. You are usually paying for style, not comfort or durability.

Hiking Backpacks

Hiking backpacks are made to be light weight while having a large amount of space. If you have back issues, hiking backpacks are a great option because of the light weight. These backpacks come in waterproof versions as well as cheaper, non waterproof versions. You should consider this if you go camping, because rain and water is always something you can run into. Another drawback is the lack of compartments. Normally, there are no compartments in hiking for organization. This is to reduce weight, but does not assist in keeping supplies separated.

Military Backpacks

Military backpacks are waterproof and have many compartments. They are also quite large, which can add weight to your carrying load. One major advantage to these backpacks is the amount of space they provide. You can fit tarps, first aid gear, pop up shelters, spare clothing, and more in these survival backpacks. Make sure when you purchase these types of backpacks, you get a high quality backpack made in the USA. There are plenty of knock-offs available for purchase, but they do not have quality materials. These backpacks are a great option if you do not have back issues and have no problem carrying extra weight.

There are many options for survival backpacks, and the choice is yours on which suits your needs. While school backpacks are not ideal for survival, you can always carry survival supplies in them with you to school. Hiking and Military backpacks are both good options – so make sure to choose the one that works best for your body and needs.
